I have worked my little bottom off the last few years in the poker industry. As per another article I once wrote, my journey is like that of the very descriptive Miley Cirus song “The Climb”. Many a day has passed when I have hummed the words “I can almost feel it, that dream I’m dreaming but, there’s a voice inside my head says “You’ll never reach it!” I am guessing everyone does, I couldn’t be alone! We all strive to get somewhere in the poker industry.
I have found in my discussions and research it is much harder for the women in poker to get anywhere on any level. Work commitments, children, housework, the list for a mother never ends. One can say that it is tiring to say the least to take a journey in the poker world. Poker doesn’t stop for you but neither does a house. If you are a single lady, it is much easier of course!
Anyway as I sit here whining to myself I am getting to a point. My journey hasn’t been easy and you know what? I am going to formally write in my personal blog the day in the life of myself. I am not guessing, but knowing that there are thousands of ladies out there that can empathise that go through the same thing every day! If you do, let me tell you that if you want to work the whacky world of poker along with normal life you need to take a page from the book of Lois from Malcolm in the middle and be tough as nails, ready for the next fall, organised, looking for trouble and highly skilled in not multi-tasking but ….multi-multi tasking hehe. So here goes, my day!
1. wake up at 4:45am to say goodbye to boyfriend and check on my puppies before getting back in bed to dose a bit
2. get up at 7am and organise kids for school as i check through normally 250 emails, plat hair find missing shoes and scream and yell before jumping in the car and driving kids to store, school and back home.
3. catch up with work colleagues on skype as I manoeuvre from washing machine to dishwasher and vacuum with laptop in hand and poker room loading
4. have something to eat and take required daily medications and vitamins as open poker table and start writing. I pretty much run around the house from this moment on with my laptop in hand as I swap loads of laundry etc.
5. Must of course pick up kids again, run them to sport and what not most afternoons, laptop comes with me and if not laptop my iPhone (its generic but we will call it that to save confusion).
6. Stop at store, get groceries come home, cook (again with laptop in hand as I play cash tables or tourneys – lesson learnt by cindy queen bee morgan that laptop must stay away from food but close enough so you don’t burn it) -Another mum in poker.
7. Get kids bathed, dressed, ready for the next day of school still with laptop in hand.
8. Write or play until I go to sleep (normally showering before hand of course)
Please note:
Things do happen in between to stop me moving in my tracks such as broken collar bones, sick kids, headaches, schools calling, punch up fights between boys as I fold pocket aces, leaking faucets, dog messes (yuk), power outages, fires, net going down, car breaking down – you get the hint! I have even had missing kids lol.
Also please note that live poker is not a possibility without a tough lady to take your place in your absence. in this case my mum! Damn I love how that woman uses a stick
Also please note that joining the mums group here at woman poker player is a fantastic idea. I was given great support and advice by one of the other mums in it on handling my kids and poker! Women of the felt, we MUST stick together!
Men of the felt; after reading this I hope you understand that women are ready for anything you throw at them most times. Women who have had the pleasure of living a life of poker and kids anyway! My washing machine just beeped for the record!
