| Is There a Poker Religion? |

Australia has been a very superstitious country dating back to the dream time when only aboriginals roamed the continent. When it comes to poker in Australia belief and superstition is still a big thing with many people going with their gut instinct or praying on the river to the poker god. It is apparent after discussions with players worldwide that this seems to be the case everywhere and we are not just a bunch of crazy Aussies. Why then are many people in the poker industry marked as atheists? Is there really a poker god or goddess? In tournaments there have been many poker champions that have begged and pleaded when they were racing or just ahead with their hand. At the 2009 Aussie million Stewart Scott was dealt pocket aces at the final table and was pushed all-in, he called out "Please, just one time!" (The Aces held up for the record and he took down the tournament). Who are these poker players talking to? Who are we all talking to? It clearly isn't just thin air and clearly there isn't a physical person. They seem to be praying and begging to someone for their hands to win races and win pots. One guesses, even if it is actually an illusion, there has to be a poker god. If there isn't then we are all totally crazy or at best a humorous group of people.
And what about politics? In saying this; could their be a new religion or political party in the making? I say political party as I wish to discuss things via writing that we are told we shouldn't; namely, politics and religion. There are Seventh Day Adventists and the members of The Church of Scientology which rack up against the long living religions. When it comes to political parties; there are the greenies and in Australia even a political party called The Sex Party. They are all taking on the big guns of the political world. Religions and political parties all have individual followers in the masses.
The Poker Players Alliance is a proven, needed and capable organisation in the poker industry and is a possibility for future political elections in my opinion. Add gaming in general to the already built tribe of poker players alliance members and we could have a very large global gaming political party. Where the real poker god or goddess stands I don't know, but it humours me. As I have played poker I have prayed to him and chanted to him or her many times. I have also cursed him or her at times. I haven't lain in bed at night praying though, so for me, that's where I draw the line. I would never lay in bed praying; "Oh mighty poker god; grant me the serenity to accept the bad beats I can not change, the courage to change the bankroll outcomes I can not accept and the wisdom to know whether my opponent is holding quads or not." It isn't going to happen. For now, I guess this summaries that in Australia at least there could be a Poker (or Gaming in General) Political Party based on the number of potential voters and the necessary and unique benefits and services they provide. However, following the poker god as a religion though is as dreamy as the aboriginal dreamtime hundreds and hundreds of years ago, isn't feasible. I can envisage online offices being built to man politics; even land based ones, but I can't see a poker church being built in the near future! Amen to the Poker Players Alliance! |
