How Do Math and Poker Mix?

 I am asked frequently how I view the role of mathematics in poker. Before addressing these views, let me preface my remarks by pointing out that most people reading this probably have a much different view of what mathematics itself is than I. People for whom calculus, elementary statistics, or high school algebra is the extent of their exposure to mathematics, simply have no idea of the broad role mathematics plays in most things.
