OK. Black Friday is a blur and Cyber Monday is behind us, but who has time to relax, get cozy and fire up the Kindle? Probably not many of us until after the holidays, but you can still send the gift of a stylish "book" to all your fashionable friends who love to devour the latest treatises on trends (and yes, we know they love to show these books off on their coffee tables, too!) - so much for those e-books, right? Here are my favorite picks from this year's fashion insiders: - "Beauty Rules: Fabulous Looks, Beauty Essentials, and Life Lessons For Loving Your Teens and Twenties" by Bobbi Brown (Chronicle Books, 2010). It's about time that renowned makeup artist Bobbi Brown came out with a new book. She concentrates on teens in this new guide, offering plenty of before-and-after makeovers and real-life advice from high-profile beauties like top model Coco Rocha (who wishes she looked like her pictures in magazines) and superstar Hillary Duff (who hated her shoulders but got over it). The best part: Step-by-step makeup tutorials on everything from taking a great yearbook photo to nailing that first job interview. Perfect for the young woman on your shopping list.
- "In Fashion: From Runway to Retail, Everything You Need to Know to Break into the Fashion Industry" by Annemarie Iverson (Clarkson Potter, 2010). You don't have to want a career in fashion to enjoy this new book filled with everything from a "Fashionista Aptitude Survey" (great conversation starters with friends at holiday get-togethers) to dishy information on how to land a dream job in this creative industry. With more than 20 years in the business, Iverson knows all the secrets to getting in the door at prestigious companies. - "A Life of Style" by Rebecca Moses (The Monacelli Press, 2010). Now this one is definitely going on my coffee table. One of my all-time favorite designers, Rebecca Moses, has captured one of the most provocative books on style that has come out in a long time. Her whimsical watercolors are frame-worthy, and her lifestyle tips on decorating, entertaining and fashion are inspiring: "What you wear is a component of how you want to live. The style link goes in every direction. Fashion, home and living are all connected. Your life is a style collage." Your friends, mothers and daughters will all love this one! - "Harper's Bazaar Fashion: Your Guide to Personal Style" by Lisa Armstrong (Hearst Books, 2010). This is probably one of the most "practical" fashion advice books in the past few years. This book takes readers through the steps to find and refine their personal style. Readers will also get fashion advice from 15 of the world's most renowned designers who have contributed original sketches and thoughts on style. And the best part, this little jewel of a book is packaged in an elegant gold, handbag-friendly size. Tres chic! - "Allure" by Diana Vreeland by Diana Vreeland with Christopher Hemphill (Chronicle Books, 2010). Another book by Diana, you ask? Yes, this fashion legend keeps resurfacing in one book after another. But this diva, the editor-in-chief of Vogue throughout the 1960s, is still one of the hottest style tickets in town. This is a new edition of the classic volume that she authored in the 1980s on the quality of "allure" in fashion and in life. By famous photographers like Man Ray, Cecil Beaton and Richard Avedon, the duo-tone black-and-white photography featured in the book is iconic and a must-have for any fashion history buff. Some other great books for the fashionistas on your gift list: - "The Style Checklist: The Ultimate Wardrobe Essentials for You" by Lloyd Boston. - "Oh No She Didn't: The Top 100 Style Mistakes Women Make and How to Avoid Them" by Clinton Kelly. - "Work It!: Visual Therapy's Guide to Your Ultimate Career Wardrobe" by Jessie Garza. - "Gentleman: A Timeless Guide to Fashion" by Bernhard Roetzel. - "What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life: Ageless Secrets of Style" by Kim Johnson Gross. - "How to Never Look Fat Again: Over 1,000 Ways to Dress Thinner - Without Dieting" by Charla Krupp. - "Gunn's Golden Rules: Life's Little Lessons For Making It Work" by Tim Gunn. - "Nina Garcia's Look Book: What to Wear for Every Occassion" by Nina Garcia. - "Blow by Blow: The Story of Isabella Blow" by Detmar Blow and Tom Sykes.
